What Is In A Name?

Callia Quartet

The Chamber Players Ensemble was established in 2017 and performed regularly in venues across South East London. We were brought together through mutual connection of the Chamber Players summer school: either as tutors on the courses, or as parents whose own children attended the courses. Our primary aim was fundraising for, and promoting the work of the Chamber Players courses.

As interest in our performances grew beyond the reaches of South London, we realised that an identity of our own was important.

The word Callia means Beauty in Greek. The word Kalliopi (Calliope) means Beautiful voice, but we felt that the name Callia Quartet had a good rhythm, and a musical sound to it, so we settled on that as our new name.

Our 2020 season kicked off with our commission and premiere performances of Thomas Hewitt Jones’ Divertimento. All further 2020 concerts had to be cancelled, but we are hoping that 2021 will continue where we left off.

We used our time during Lockdown to fundraise for 2 further commissions from Thomas Hewitt Jones and we are looking forward to bringing the premieres of these pieces to you in early 2021.
